I loved this movie! Andrew Lloyd Webber's enchanting lyrics and soothing and uplifting melodies make me crave to watch it again and again, and I thought the chemistry on screen was fantastic. Gerard Butler made a great phantom, and I thought he nailed it. The movie was COMPLETELY different from the book, but I respect and understand why it is that way. And you know what? I'm totally cool with it as it is. In the book I hated the Phantom, but in the movie I was screaming at the screen the whole time telling Christine she was an idiot. I mean, sure he was a murderer and all... The story is good, and like I said before, the songs are fantastic!

“The Music of the Night ”

One of the hottest screen performances of any actor ever! When Gerard Butler seduces Emmy Rossum... wow! I wish that were me in her place.

... I was less than thrilled by some of the changes they made to the plot, and Gerard Butler, though a fantastic actor, just didn't do it for me as the Phantom. His voice lacks the beautiful, seductive quality that characterized the "real" Phantom (i.e. Leroux's) and the work of Michael Crawford and some of the other stage Phantoms

It had a Less caricature-ish feel that some of the Phantom movies [skin face mask horror films, anyone?] have had.

Gerry Butler's acting was top notch, and heartrending. Some people complain that he was too handsome to be given the phantom role. Ordinarily I would agree, but this particular movie was about how the true problem was more deep-seated than his face. It is about the phantom and his shattered psyche.

I liked Gerry's singing more than Michael Crawford's, actually. It wasn't too cloyingly sweet. AT times in the plot you could feel the pain.

Emmy was good as Christine, Patrick was great as Raoul. Yet one can't help wonder about how it would have been if the movie had ended differently.

But there is the strength of this movie. You feel as if the characters are caught in this dance. They can't change who they are. And thus it ends.

I became a fan of Gerard Butler after watching this. I've seen the stage musical many times and I thought they did an excellent job in this movie version... except for the fact Minnie Driver doesn't do her own singing.

This was a pretty good adaptation of Phantom, except for the singing. For example, the Phantom is supposed to be an operatic singer, and Gerard Butler didn't fit the role vocally in that area. If they had stronger singers, it would have been a perfect movie!
