Maybe I'm the one who's missed the mach here, but I think this film is a 5 star winner. With respect to this film's detractors, I just don't think you see it. In cases of comics-to-film, generally, I think we want to see our characters come to life on screen, suspending our disbelief as we watch a dramatic tale unfold.

Folks, Speed Racer already has an established sensibility of movement as well as visual style. It's fantastic, and dynamic, and wonderfully frenetic. It is an animated comic soap opera. Yes, there are certainly dramatic moments (that's why we care so much), but it's also very much an action comedy. So, this movie delivered in every conceivable way. The approach was perfect!

Refresh your memory with a few episodes and you may find that the Brothers W gave us a perfect retelling of an animated comic soap opera with strong dramatic elements. For Pete's sake, we even got the moral play people...and all at hundreds of miles per hour! Here he comes, here comes Speed Racer!

This is a fun, well acted, visually fascinating movie. The previews don't do the movie justice. Yes, it's pretty fluffy, but I've never seen the original cartoon and I still liked the movie enough to see it twice opening weekend. Please, people, give it the benefit of the doubt. The reviews are bizarrely hostile. The movie really is much better than that. Even the hot Korean pop star turns out to be a pretty good actor. Hiroyuki Sanada shows up for only a few scenes, but he's brilliant as always.

I can't believe anyone would think it was a good idea to make Speed Racer into a movie. I there such a lack of original ideas in Hollywood that they must resort to dredging up old cartoon shows? I was an adult when I watch the cartoon show and loved it because Speed was such an egomaniac that had to win at all costs. Fine for a 20 minute cartoon but a 90 minute move? I think not, 10 thumbs down!

I think this will be one of the biggest duds this summer. Probably will do well overseas since Rain is in it (he's big in Japan). Otherwise, this looks like a pretty weak entry from the guys that did The Matrix

After seeing the trailor for this on Yahoo!, I really hope this crashes on the side of the road. The story is nothing new and in my opinion this was used as an excuse to go into new territory with visual effects (CGI). Just another summer, hopefully not blockbuster, movie that's more style over substance.
