According to NME.com, Radiohead will do an environmentally friendly "green" performance for "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" to be aired this Wednesday, April 23rd. According to lead singer Thom Yorke, flying across the Atlantic to tape the one-off performance leaves a carbon footprint that equals driving one's car for a solid year. The band has chosen a more ecological option--to record the performance in London to reduce their pollution contribution.

On the surface, it seems Radiohead made this revolutionary move by a realization that they could do everything a record label was doing for them. To a business person, it's the simply idea of cutting out unnecessary middlemen.

The risk in this situation, like many business ventures, was that they were putting their own money on the line without any guarantee that people would actually pay for the download. The benefit, however, with no production, distribution, or heavy marketing is that far less money for the same product went entirely to the "at-risk" investment by the band.

In recent new, a handful of other artists have been rumored to have intentions of mimicking this formula such as Madonna and Courtney Love. This is where fans need to give credit where it is due to Radiohead. They made a wise business decision by recognizing who their fans are and how to best market to them. Their fans are generally critical, quality based and involved consumers. Can Madonna say the same?

They've always said giving stuff away for free or digitally will kill an album's sales and the industry. This has officially been proven to not be the case. The lesson learned: Create a good album, pair that with a good guerrilla/viral marketing strategy... and it will succeed.

Radiohead just flat out isn't the amazing band that everyone paints them to be. True, their marketing of In Rainbows was genius and their views on the music industry are definitely valid. But the music itself is pretty lame. I feel like I have to sort through so much noise and pretentious artsiness before I find the actual song when I'm listening to them. The White Stripes are a much better band, and have the same degree of ingenuity.
