As if giving the option of a flexibly-priced album wasn't enough, Nine Inch Nails has posted their new single for free for download on their official site. "Discipline" went to radio today and is being offered for free download or remix.

Have you heard the new Nine Inch Nails album, "Ghosts"? What do you think of NIN's idea of flexible pricing for music? Would you buy a CD to support an artist if you didn't have to?

not only was the viral marketing and packaging awesome, but this seems to be NIN with a sense of purpose that spoke to me. the songs were different and great and the concept is awesome. i recognize "The Downward Spirals" will always be the best NIN record, but this came damn close for me - and i usually can't stand Reznor.

Yet another album, yet another CD of rehashed exercises in vagueness that's just pretentious enough to sound meaningful. The sound of this music was pretty amazing in the early 90s, but at this point it's nothing new, and the lyrics have changed from "sophomoric to appropriate" to "just plain embarrassing". It's honestly unclear what exactly he's supposed to be satirizing at this point. They had one bona fide classic with "The Downward Spiral", but since then it's been, well, a bit of a downward spiral.

Going strong for almost 20 years! While imitators have flashed and faded Trent Reznor has kept the broken machine grinding on. Definitely check out their early stuff - Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, The Downward Spiral - and give "Year Zero" a listen, it's their strongest work since Downward Spiral. If you're looking for a loud, sweaty, visceral experience, then definitely check out a NIN show when they're in town - you won't be disappointed.
